Thomas Smetana was born in Salzburg, Austria, in 1966. From 1981 to 1989, he worked on archaeological sites in Austria and Greece as a restorer.

He traveled extensively through Europe and the US, including a six-month stay in Los Angeles.

From 1990 to 1993, he assisted Gerhard Merzeder, one of the most successful photographers in Austria working at an international level.

In 1994, he began shooting independently, having gained his master's certificate in photography. This work was mainly based in Linz, Vienna, and Munich.

As well as working solidly in Austria, his assignments have taken him as far afield as South Africa and Australia.

He has won both national and international awards for his work.

He works mainly in the advertising and editorial fields, with diversity being the keyword for his unique style.
